MacBook Pro Slow?

The day finally arrived… We received our MacBook Pro today, shipped direct from Shanghai. I’m using a Mac, and so far it’s a nice, if confusing experience. I’ll keep it brief because I’m honestly still settling in. Observations from a Mac-Intel convert…

The Good (in no particular order)

  1. Packaging: This was made for those who like to keep gadget boxes (check the new photos section for a pic).
  2. Widgets are the bump. I’ve come to love hitting F12, zooming in and out of widgets for no reason.
  3. Speedy Safari - Is it the Intel Core Duo CPU? Who cares? This is some of the fastest browsing I’ve ever seen.
  4. Built in iSight webcam = me making lots of funny faces in front of laptop
  5. MagSafe power connector is just like the one on my hotpot/tea kettle.
  6. Unix appeals to my inner geek.

The Weird (in no particular order)

  1. Default trackpad sensitivity is set way too low. I had to crank it up to amphetamine level to make it useable.
  2. Firefox 1.5 is s-l-o-w. Don’t know why. Just takes an eternity to launch when compared to Safari (not optimized for MacIntel yet?)
  3. OK, I installed Firefox, now I have these weird objects on my desktop that I can “eject”. I eventually figured this one out, but certainly didn’t seem intuitive to me.
  4. Where’s the right mouse button yo?
  5. The preponderance of “option” buttons befuddles me. I’m used to “ctrl” and “alt” and rarely use “fn”. This guy has “ctrl”, “alt/option”, “fn” and the infamous “apple/squiggly” buton. I feel like a 3rd base coach. Which one tells the base runner the steal is on?
  6. Can someone please explain to me what the Finder is supposed to be finding if Spotlight is doing the searching? I’ve been wondering this since the original beige Mac in 1984.

For something that is supposedly so intuitive, I’ve been surprisingly confused as far as how this thing works. Although, perhaps that’s the point of it all. I’ve been able to accomplish everything I needed to thus far.
I don’t know if this is because OS X is that easy and I really don’t need to know about the intricacies of the OS to get the job done, or if I’m just a conditioned neanderthal Windows cave-dweller that would complain about running water if given the opportunity.
