kingdom of loathing

Congrats on your success in defeating the Naughty Sorceress. The first time always seems so fustrating.
I suggest having a dozen chow meins in your inventory before you ascend. I also recommend you go to the Untinkerer to have him untinker your Bitchin Meatcar before you ascend. (Dope Wheels and Meat Engines can come with […]

cats swimming

I don’t know why, but we thought if they ever needed to, our cats probably should know how to swim. Thinking the internet would certainly provide some kind of resource for this kind of thing, I performed a half-assed search through Google and Flickr. After about 2 minutes of searching (that’s about my attention span […]

hanami

Spring has officially arrived, but the cherry blossoms where 9th St meets Stuyvesant St have not…

more wooster hotness

I guess I’m more of a fan of street art than I thought… Wooster Collective is covering the… covering of street art in Melbourne, Australia. Due to the nearing Olympic games, the city has taken to painting over years of graffiti. This doesn’t sound out of the ordinary at all as the cycle of graffiti, city cleanup is well known and chronicled here in NYC. Tags go up, tags get covered up. Repeat. However, in Melbourne, what gets thrown up can be slightly different. It may be due to my lack of exposure, but we don’t see street art like this in NYC:

giraffes

…and even though we get more than our fair share of anti-Bush sentiment in our neighborhood, I haven’t seen anything as, dare I say, interactive, as this:

public urinal

Irreverent, fun, and just a nice way to learn a little more about your world.

…the skewed human touch that can bring a little sparkle into the drudgery of public space. A feat that is of immense value, despite its apparent worthlessness

the woz

Steve Wozniak’s autobiography “I, Woz” is coming out this fall and I’m itching to get a hold of it. The San Jose Mercury news is running a brief interview with the Woz detailing some well trodden ground, and also some idiosyncrasies about being the co-founder of Apple.

I was in Boston once. I needed two AC adapters. I ran into this new Apple store. I went up to the counter, “I’d like two 65-watt AC adapters.'’ I didn’t say anything about who I was. And they bring them out. I say, “How much?'’ They say, “We are expensing it.'’ I said, “Yeah, but how do I pay for it?'’ They said, “No, no, no — we are allowed to give gifts to special people.'’

While Woz’s following may not be as numerous as that of the other Steve, I’d argue they’re at least as adoring, if not more so. Why the popularity for someone who has flown under the radar for so long? In my opinion, he’s an uncorruptible force, unswayed by fortune or fame; a reluctant success story. He started out wanting to build computers, and is largely still the OG (original geek) he always has been. Seriously, the guy participates in Segway Polo, ’nuff said.

mo’ money, less stuff

what is it about having more money that translates to having less stuff? 40 Bond St. is a new development just south of my place. why do the fanciest places always have the least stuff? most concept imagery leads us to believe the super-wealthy live in a world free of clutter. i suppose all that […]

partying with snoop dogg

Tank Carter, brother of Pittsburg Steeler safety Tyrone Carter, is going to jail for 4.5 years (via profootballtalk) because he valued attending the Super Bowl, and partying with Snoop Dogg more than reporting for a 6 month jail sentence.
Undaunted, Carter told reporters, “Even knowing what I know now, I would do it again. It was […]

mother unicron

Brian Worthen of CIO magazine [via digg] throws up a complicated and colorful map of the North American Internet backbone. It’s basically a representation of a bunch of fiber optic cable and 100,000+ routers. (Full PDF version available for download here)

The map is color coded by ownership, with Verizon and AT&T taking up sizable, but […]

queueing

Recently, I’ve become acutely aware of queueing. Not queue theory; I’m not that smart. I’m talking about plain old waiting in line. I see it everywhere, and I can’t help but wonder what could be so valuable?

You know it, you’ve done it, and you probably spent some of your day in some kind of queue […]

2067

Oh MSN, please tell me how long I will live… 91 years you say?
I’ll beat that. Give me some beasty stem cells and I’m a happy centenarian.
Aya scored a whopping 102 years. Her grandfather lived to be 94 and doubled as a smokestack for 80 years. I’ll definitely need those stem cells please.

mean people suck

For as long as I’ve lived in NYC there has always been the classic bait/switch routine on St. Marks and 3rd Ave. A non-threatening dude hangs out on the block by Cooper Union and hands out “mean people suck” stickers. As soon as some sucker takes the sticker, he asks for a donation of $1 […]
