No offense to Lifelong Kindergarten, but one of the coolest ideas to come out of the MIT Media Lab is the $100 laptop. Intended for developing children around the world, this non-profit organization’s goal is to provide the children of the world with an affordable, accessible tool to explore and learn.

I am not an avid fan of graffitti. I generally like it, and enjoy the creativity and ubiquity in my neighborhood, but I have never personally had a connection to it. Of course, it’s all the rage these days. You can’t throw a mumbleboy in a book store without hitting some graf related merch. However, there are certain types I can appreciate and admire. Jorge Rodriguez-Gerada puts up large scale charcoal paintings on buildings, only to have them washed away at the first rain. This conjures thoughts of Escher, Futura and Sisyphus all at once.

AK brought home another set of munchies, this time from JAS Mart. We tried a snack called Tamanegi-san. Tamanegi-san can be roughly translated to Mr. Onion.
The bag contains what can only be described as a cross between Cheez Puffs and Funyuns. The consistency was similar to Cheez Puffs (not Cheetos mind you, those are […]
Chalk this up to the things that I’ve been meaning to do for some time, haven’t done, but can’t wait too much longer because time is running out…
I’m planning to make a trip to the Iridium Jazz club in midtown on a Monday night in the very near future. What makes a Monday so special? Each week, the venerable Les Paul plays sets at 8:00PM and 10:00PM. This year, he turns 91 years old. I’m not expecting to see the man make the guitar he invented wail, but it’s not everyday you get to see a tinkering geek legend of music get up on stage (although, technically it does happen every week). Besides, I’ve always wanted to own a Les Paul Standard.
As with most people of legendary status, they rarely travel alone. From what I understand, it’s not uncommon for special guests to drop in and jam when they’re in town. I don’t expect to see anyone but Les, but it would be a nice bonus. There is record of many of the hobnobbers for all to view at redhotred.com. My favorite pic is below.

Who’s that cadaver in the middle? Apparently it doesn’t matter because Jackie is clearly the star here.
You make something off-white or beige because you are afraid to use any other color–because you don’t want to offend anybody. But by definition, when you make something no one hates, no one loves it. So I am interested in imperfections, quirkiness, insanity, unpredictability. That’s what we really pay attention to anyway. - Tibor Kalman, […]
sometimes mobloggin’ is lessbloggin’
0 Comments Published by ken March 8th, 2006 in bones in ice creamTextamerica is a site dedicated to mobile blogging. Of course, the integration tech is what drew me to take a peek. I happen to love hooking things up, sometimes just for the sake seeing things work together. Hooking up the cellphone in your hand, to a cell tower, to the internet, to your blog, and […]
When I saw this Geico commercial poking fun at cavemen, I knew something was fishy.
Caveman or Val Kilmer? I think it puts a new spin on the nickname “Iceman“.
It’s official: A new Japanese treat has landed in Manhattan. Tonight AK brought home a bag of gorira no hana kuso. This literally translates to “nose shit of gorilla”. Less literally, this translates to “gorilla boogers”. This wouldn’t be noteworthy unless they were edible. (they are)
These have been available in Japan for a few years. […]
Beige isn’t just a color…
- Beige book. The Federal Reserve Bank gathers anecdotal information on current economic conditions in its District through reports from Bank and Branch directors and interviews with key business contacts, economists… I’ve already nodded off just typing this.
- Beige record label. It is the self-proclaimed premier label in St. Louis, Missouri. Yawn
- Beige programming collective. Most certainly disciples of the MySpace skool of design
- Worthy of a fan club. If accepted, I will be member #71.
- Beige Magazine. A defunct dvd only mag. What’s with the twins? I didn’t know magazines were supposed to scare you into subscribing.
- Beige Plus. A north london plus-size boutique. Got to love the “no quibble” refund policy.
Today’s beige scenario:
My Windows PC just gave me the blue screen of death . Irony? You make the call.
A little while ago I posted a little blurb about procedural generation as it would exist in Will Wright’s upcoming game Spore. In anticipation of this year’s Game Developers Conference in beautiful San Jose comes a very excellent demonstration by the master himself. Check out the personal walkthrough by Will Wright on Google Video. It’s been around a while, but is definitely worth a view for the curious.
This game blows my mind. In the video, Will Wright guides you through the process of controlling a one-celled organism all the way through galactic (yes, galaxies) domination or exploration for those with a less imperialistic lean.
